Stoya’s sweating in the passenger seat of a cherry red rental car, her pale face shadowed by a hat she wore to the Kentucky Derby a few days ago, her eyes shielded from the sun by oversized dark glasses, and her feet strapped into stilettos. It’s 1pm on a Wednesday in Texas, and she’s speaking to Bizarre as she speeds towards Alabama – to get her vagina photographed.
“I was on a roadtrip around the southern states when the people at Fleshlight said they needed a particular sort of picture of my lady-parts – it’s very technical and complex – so I’m heading over there now,” she giggles. “It’s a fantastic adventure!”
By getting her skin immortalised in rubber, the former God’s Girl will join the likes of Tera Patrick, Riley Steele, Eva Angelina, Teagan Presley and Jenna Haze. It’s Stoya’s first sex toy, and another boost to her profile in the adult industry.
Since becoming a Digital Playground contract star in 2007, she’s made 24 movies for the company – including the cinematic parody Pirates 2: Stagnetti’s Revenge – and last year she won the AVN award for Best New Starlet.
Despite her continuing success, she stopped making movies last March, dated Marilyn Manson, and became a waitress. So what’s the alt.porn star’s story?

It begins several states east, in North Carolina. Born to a Serbian father who worked in a nuclear plant and a Scottish mother who was a civil engineer, Stoya was home-schooled and the family moved to Delaware when she was 12.
She finished her education at 16 and tried a few art classes before realising “no-one can teach you how to be creative”. With no friends from childhood, she moved to Philadelphia to start life on her own.
“I had my diploma, and I didn’t want to do anything until I was 18,” Stoya explains. “I don’t drive, so I needed to be in a metropolitan area where you can take the bus, or subway, or walk. At the time my dad was so busy with work – I’m not sure he even realised that 16 isn’t the age most people move out. My mother understood, when I explained it logically.”
A string of jobs followed, including a six-day stint in fast food chain Subway, a spell as a hostess at an Italian restaurant, a role folding cashmere sweaters in a baby boutique, a year as a secretary, and some time as a go-go dancer. Despite loving the clubs, she can’t remember the songs she danced to.
“I can’t keep track of music – who did what, or what album it was, or what genre of music,” she confesses. “I was dating a musician for a few months and went on tour with him. One of his songs comes on, and I was like, ‘Oh, this is really pretty! Who is this?’ He was like, ‘Dear Stoya, you’ve heard this song 40 times, how can you not recognise it?’ I’m that bad with music.” Was it Marilyn Manson? “It could’ve been... let me direct you to my policy on not naming names!”
One Saturday morning in 2005, Stoya’s photographer housemate asked her a question that changed her life. “He came out of his bedroom and said, ‘How do you feel about being naked?’” she remembers. “I’m splayed out on the couch with my laptop open wearing a fishnet shirt and little shorts, and I thought: ‘How do I feel about being naked?’ And he said, ‘How do you feel about being naked in public?’
A couple of websites wanted him to do nude photosets, and of course he immediately thought of me! I said, ‘OK, we can try this, and if the pictures are good then we can sell them.’ And if not, then I’d known him for years, and I knew he’d delete them and we’d pretend it never happened.”

Stoya did eight sets for Godsgirls.com, and more jobs followed. She moved to Los Angeles to work with the likes of Christine Kessler, Winkytiki and Steve Diet Goedde, learned how to make latex clothing, and showed off her blue hair and nipple piercings in a girl-on-girl scene for Jack The Zipper’s Razordolls.
She missed Philadelphia and moved back, but during a visit to LA, Digital Playground asked her if she’d be interested in a scene with Sophia Santi – and if she’d thought about working with men.
“I went home and considered it,” recalls Stoya. “I thought about the repercussions, and really the only thing I could think of was if I wanted to work with children or be a politician, then hardcore pornography would be harder to explain than nude photographs.
I don’t see myself as a kindergarten teacher or a senator. Then I evaluated the physical and health risks, and it seemed they were worth the benefits. And it seemed like it would be fun.”
The first film she shot for Digital Playground was Stoya Video Nasty, in which she gets spanked with a paddle and performs a 69. The first one they released was Jack’s POV 9, where she does the reverse cowgirl and a foot job with Tommy Gunn. After posing for softcore material, it took a change of mindset.
“When I’m doing a photoshoot, I’m playing to the camera. When I’m doing an adult scene, I’m focused on the other person or people in the scene,” explains Stoya. “I’ve usually met the performers, because I want to make sure there’s at least some shred of chemistry there, they’re fantastically funny, or have nice eyes. You go in and flirt before the scene and get them wound up and into it.”
But some of her sex scenes are purely functional. Despite Pirates 2 winning 23 awards, Stoya describes it as “fucking boring” to shoot. “I was in a giant orgy scene, so six other girls had to go through make-up and there was no dialogue,” she says.
“It was one of the longest days of my life! I don’t like orgy scenes because there’s so much going on that you can’t possibly focus on one person. You’re trying to get someone off, and then someone’s trying to rip you away from them. It’s better to keep it down to three or four and do it right.”

That’s not to say that fantasy porn scenarios don’t happen. While in Las Vegas for the AVN awards, Stoya asked industry pros how to perform double penetration and got some unexpected help.
“Me, Joanna Angel and James Deen were talking at the bar, and James recommended another performer I hadn’t met called Steve Holmes,” Stoya says. “I asked if the two of them worked well together because the whole vagina-asshole area is delicate. You don’t want to have two penises there that are uncomfortable being next to each other, because you don’t want to have any accidents.
Then Steve walked up, and I said, ‘Oh, hello, I need to talk to you about putting your penis in my asshole!’ And James was like, ‘We can just go practice this upstairs.’ And I was like, ‘You’re a genius, let’s go!’ So the four of us went upstairs and it was hilarious. Then we did it again on camera for Digital Playground and it was wonderful.”
The movie hasn’t come out yet because of wrangles with Digital Playground. In March 2009, Stoya stopped acting, and says there are around five unreleased titles. “At that time, I’d done every act on camera that I’d wanted to,” she explains. “I’d worked with Belladonna and some of the best performers in the industry, and it wasn’t new and exciting anymore. If my heart isn’t in it, that comes across on camera.”
To fill her time, Stoya began waitressing in an Asian restaurant because she likes “to feel like a productive member of society”. She enjoyed the work, but was occasionally recognised by customers.
“You know Stolichnaya vodka, right? Stoli? Once someone thought they were being cute by asking for a ‘Stoya martini on the rocks.’ And I was like, ‘Excuse me?’ And they were like, ‘Stoli, I meant Stoli!’ and I said, ‘That’s what I thought!’”
During this time, Marilyn Manson sent Stoya a MySpace message, asking to meet. She assumed he was a horny 15-year-old trying his luck and replied with the words, “Absolutely no fucking way”.
But after a few exchanges she decided the mystery man was “witty, engaging and interesting”, and bit the bullet. “I wanted to meet the guy in a public place like a coffee shop, but then I realised if it was him that’d be a recipe for disaster because I like to keep my personal life private,” Stoya reveals. “I had someone drive me to his house, and we get out and ring the doorbell, and the door opens, and the person I had with me said, ‘I really think this is him.’ And I said, ‘How can you tell?’ And they said, ‘I’ve seen pictures...’ We hung out for a while and he’s intelligent, but I won’t go into details because it’d be incredibly rude to kiss and tell.”
While Manson was on the press trail promoting The High End Of Low, a journalist wrote that the God Of Fuck had shaved a swastika into Stoya’s pubic hair – and the gossip websites went wild.
“People will believe fucking anything,” Stoya fumes. “Who really listens to what The Sun says? I’m sorry, not to slam the British press as a whole, but...” Wasn’t it The Times that broke the story? “No, it was The Sun that posted about it first. I have my vagina with me at all times, and the most interesting thing that’s been shaved on it is a ‘V’. I got a mountain of shit from my Jewish friends. They were like, ‘Hey I’m in town, but I don’t know if you want to hang out with me!’”
Stoya’s also quick to dispel rumours that she quit porn for her relationship. “Marilyn Manson got me in contact with the lawyer I needed to handle my negotiations with Digital Playground,” she explains.
“I’d spent six months looking at lawyers, and if he hadn’t put me in touch with the right people I wouldn’t have left porn then, it would’ve been later when I found the right lawyer. I find it quite insulting that people would think I’d do anything, just for one penis. He’s a fantastic man, but if I wanted to be told what to do by a boyfriend I wouldn’t have started doing porn in the first place; I would’ve got myself the right boyfriend.”
Late last year the couple split, and Manson got engaged to his previous girlfriend, actress Evan Rachel Wood. Meanwhile, Stoya’s thoughts are back on porn – aside from the Fleshlight, she’s in talks with Digital Playground about directing one of her own movies. It’s clear a sexy future lies ahead of her. When asked how she’ll celebrate her upcoming 24th birthday, there’s a thoughtful pause. “Maybe I’ll go to the local strip club and pick up all the girls and fill up a baby pool of green jello and play naked Ghostbusters wrestling,” she giggles. “Really that’s just a thing I’d say to justify the jello being green, to get the girls in...”
