“I’ve always been into tattoos. My first one was a bit stupid – I got a pair of wings on my back when I was young – but since then I’ve wanted more and more.
“They don’t have any meaning; they’re just about expressing myself and looking great. For instance, I’d never liked the way my legs looked, but after I got one inked with an owl and a moon, I loved them.
“When I get a tattoo I start off with an idea, but I give the artist room to be imaginative and I’m not pushy about what I want. That’s how my chest piece came about – I wanted some cool art there, and the artist came up with the idea. It’s an hourglass with huge wings, topped with a masonic pyramid. The artist even suggested inverting the pyramid on top so it’d look cooler!
“The only ink I don’t like is on my left side. It’s an intricate Japanese-style piece with a snake and a crow fighting in a cherry blossom storm. It’s only outlined, though, because I broke up with a friend of the tattooist and then he had a problem with finishing it, which was ridiculous since I was paying him.
“I’ll get it completed at some point, but it’s difficult to find an artist willing to finish someone else’s work.
“The only tattoo I’d never get is a portrait – except maybe of my dog, Jezebel. I’m obsessed with her; she’s like my child! When I’m not around her I get separation anxiety.
“Back in 2004, when I started modelling, it was still taboo for a woman to have a lot of tattoos. I felt like I didn’t fit in and moved to the US. When I returned home, I was worried about finding enough work – but now tattooed models are encouraged, and the alt.scene is exploding!”
