An evening with Satyricon

When I spoke to Satyr from Satyricon for Bizarre 143, he said he wanted the band to transcend genre conventions and be known for their own music:

“For me, one of the goals for Satryicon is to move us into a place where we’re just Satyricon – not black metal thrash metal or whatever. In many people’s heads, we’re already there, but some people haven’t thought about it. For me, I want our music to be considered for good and for bad, for what the music is – not part of a movement or something like that.”

Last night I saw them at ULU, and they were doing a pretty good job of it. Satyr came on looking tense, but gradually warmed up and started joking with the crowd. “I’m a human jukebox!” he laughed, in response to cries for ‘King’. Meanwhile, against the strobe lighting a bare-chested Frost drummed like a machine. They even played a double encore – one with ‘King’ and ‘Fuel For Hatred’, and another of ‘Mother North’.

Dark… and awesome.

A drink with Opeth

Last night I went to the premiere of Opeth’s new DVD The Roundhouse Tapes, at the Prince Charles cinema in Leicester Square. It was recorded two years ago at a gig in converted engine shed The Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, and I was there. Singer Mikael Åkerfeldt introduced it by saying, “Get ready for the greatest film you’ve ever seen in your life!”

But away from the screen and in a London bar, he confessed to me he was actually nervous about the gig. “I wanted to look at it as any other show, but it’s inevitable that once you’re filming it causes all sorts of stress and it takes away from that fact you’re going to do a good show,” he said. “But it was a decent show!”

It was strange to watch a film of a live performance on a big screen, but the sound was turned up to gig levels and it was really absorbing. Aside from the massive-sounding music – the evil ‘Under The Weeping Moon’ is on there along with ‘Demon Of The Fall’ – it was another chance to re-live Mikael’s onstage banter. He interacts with a fan who hands him a ‘Nobody Knows I’m A Lesbian’ T-shirt, and calls everyone a “bunch of cocks” – just because he can.

Since he’s got such a dry sense of humour, I couldn’t resist asking him the classic ‘How Bizarre Is…’ question: Necrophilia, coprophilia, or bestiality? “Coprophilia, that’s eating shit, right? It’s difficult. I’d never eat shit, so it’d have to be fucking the dead. It’d have to be a fresh corpse, though…” I told him someone chose the shit option last week, and he asked who. When I explained it was Johan Hegg from fellow Swedish band Amon Amarth, he looked and me and sighed, “that explains it…”

Posted in Uncategorized on October 16, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Excitingly, warpaint-covered Vikings Turisas and thrash metallers The Haunted are going to play Bloodstock next year, 14-16 August at Catton Hall!

It’ll be Turisas’ only UK appearance next year. If you can’t wait until then, keep checking back to see a review of their forthcoming DVD A Finnish Summer With Turisas

Anyway, I promised you Bloodstock 2008 photos from my disposable camera, and I’ve managed to find them in the dusty recesses of a development shop. Enjoy!

Hello!

What more can I add – the Bizarre Ball was awesome! Here are some of my highlights:

- Being greeted excitedly at the venue by the lovely Lola Pops and Impressive Johnson

- Dancing to Andre WK with some of Team Bizarre – party hard!

- Meeting Samppa Von Cyborg, apparently one of only 3 guys with implants in the city…

- Handing out syringe pens and meeting loads of you guys, including Frankie and her fiancée, Alan and his friends, the giant ice cream lady (so cool!), the two lovely people who I talked to about a band (one of you had the name stenciled on your chest and one of you took my email address – let us know who you are and we’ll check out the music!), Morgana and her basket of sweets and glowsticks, not to mention everyone in the cloakroom queue who was so patient and friendly.

- Watching Mademoiselle Fifi’s Voodoo Bitch Doctor act – bloody eyes, gruesome comedy, and plenty of sparks!

- Enjoying Vicky Butterfly’s act – a genuinely unique and impressive sight to behold

- Seeing Garry Stretch for the first time – arghhhhhhhh!!!!! :O

- Alix’s Proud To Be Different moment, and you guys flooding the stage.

As the newest addition to Team Bizarre I felt genuinely proud to be involved with such fantastic readers – you really made the night and you rock! I sadly didn’t have a camera on the night, so please send in all your photos and messages. Also, big thanks to my housemate Huw who let me borrow his Japanese fighter pilot goggles…

See you all next time!

Bloodstock 2008!

Hello! How awesome was Bloodstock? Over 30 bands played in the picturesque grounds of the 17th century Catton Hall - all in the name of METAL!

My favourite were Tyr, Opeth, Soilwork, Swallow The Sun, Alestorm and At The Gates - but more about that in Bizarre 142.

Aside from the music, there was a chance to drink beer, feel sick on the bumper cars (and whatever the hell those other scary rides were!), wave flags, and watch scary motorbike stunts. It was also cool to see so many people in costume, including the dude in a wedding dress, the caveman, and pirates aplenty – not to mention the man with a padlock through his septum, or the guy in the bright pink tutu…

The rain made the music even better (especially Soilwork!) and I still ate loads of ice cream. Did anyone else find the van with the buy two and get one free offer? :D

In true DIY style I took some pics with a disposable camera - check back in a week to see what went down… And post your comments/pics here! For now, here are a couple of my favourite bits captured on YouTube:

Opeth – ‘Heir Apparent’ – How freakin’ cool did the ending sound? Start at 7.30 if you can’t wait to hear it.

Alestorm open with The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air theme tune! And play ‘Over The Seas’! Altogether now: “Many moons ago, in a faraway land / We met an old man, with a hook for a hand!”

Later,

El x
