Glenn Barr has been creating smudgy, dingy glimpses of city life for almost three decades. This anthology of his paintings, photographs and sketches provides a window on his obsessions: Americana, the night, and women. And we mean women, not girls - all smoky eyes, curled lips and beehives, Barr's beauties make his pictures spring to life. They smoke impossibly long cigarettes, and cut freakishly elegant figures, even when they're sprawled on beds or preparing backstage at a strip joint.
Barr's hometown of Detroit provides the oily, smoky, muted, sometimes surreal backdrop to his work, contrasting with the photographs of his bright vintage plastic toys and fairgrounds that run alongside his paintings.
