A dizzyingly epic combat game based on a classic poem. Dragons! Hellions! Moral panic!

Sultry Egyptian princesses whose breasts burst open to reveal knife-wielding devil babies. Sprawling landscapes of pulsating human flesh that are divided into islands by steaming rivers of raw sewage. Tortured souls boiled for eternity to punish their obsession with money and riches.

Death, destruction, demons, darkness, damnation… and a shadowy citadel that looks like an enormous cock standing proud on the horizon, which potential heroes must scale to save their loved ones.

Welcome to the dizzy world of Dante’s Inferno, an action adventure that’s sure to send our moral guardians into a frenzy when released this month.

Loosely based on Inferno, the first book of Dante Alighieri’s epic poem  The Divine Comedy (and with a plot by Will Rokos, the screenwriter behind the movie Monster’s Ball), Dante’s Inferno sees players taking control of a veteran of the crusades in medieval times, who willingly descends into the underworld to try and snatch his beloved’s soul back from the clutches of Lucifer.

A bit like the über-violent God Of War – but with a few more puzzles shoehorned in to punctuate the carnage – Dante’s Inferno is about combat and offing hellions in the most gruesome way possible, with players pounding  the attack keys, stringing together outrageous combos and countering assaults from Satan’s spawn to move through the nine circles of hell.

But with the ability to absolve or punish the souls of fellow humans you meet along the way, and either become more holy or evil in the process, there’s a little more depth to this game than simple button mashing and demon smashing.

Sick, gory and delightfully twisted, Dante’s Inferno sounds perfect for Bizarre readers, and could be one of the gaming highlights of 2010.
