Madina Lake

Matthew Leone from Madina Lake shares his links to the weirdest and wildest sites on the internet!

What’s the weirdest bookmark on your browser?

Consumption Junction (www.consumptionjunction.com). It’s really disgusting. It’s one of those shock value ones and it’s about as revolting as things in life can be. It’s like people having accidents with their bowels and things involving dead animals. I saw this guy who was lifting weights and shit out all of his guts. I don’t know how it happened but his intestines were on the floor!

What’s your favourite thing you’ve ever read about yourself online?

I really don’t like to read stuff about myself as it just makes me uncomfortable. Someone recognised me as a lover of the earth and the cosmos and that was rewarding. I had a Facebook (www.facebook.com/pages/Nathan-Leone/58273412931) profile up for a week and then my dad invited me to be friends and that’s when I had to stop. I couldn’t have a producer commenting about hookers while my dad was commenting about my niece!

Have you ever Googled yourself?

No, definitely not. I’m afraid of that stuff; it keeps me up at night. I read a few things where someone was pretending to be me and being a dick and a womaniser, and it made me feel uncomfortable.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever bought online?

I bought a mysterious reel of 8mm film – the guy that was selling it didn’t know what was it! I was really excited about it but it turned out to be a bunch of Old Mcdonald’s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbY3nR3cSK0) and Coca-Cola commercials. I think he saw it and just suckered me with the ‘mysterious’ part…

What’s the most shocking thing that you’ve come across?

Apart from that guy shitting his guts out, '2 Girls 1 Cup' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2_Girls_1_Cup). I gagged a little bit. I have a pretty weak gag reflex. Seeing something like that did it. We all watched it in our hotel room and so everyone had the same extreme reaction. But it was the people who kept watching after the thrill was over that really disturbed me…

What site would you delete from your history if if someone was going to use your computer?

Probably an ex-girlfriend’s MySpace (MySpace.com). It just takes one quick poke, and really you know you shouldn’t. I exercise a lot of restraint but if you go there you just don’t want your friends knowing. I’d also delete the online pharmacies (www.onlinepharmacytracker.com). Sometimes I can’t sleep and I need Xanax. We don’t have insurance here in good old America so we’ve got to be cheeky about it.

Do you ever play online games and do you have an avatar?

No I don’t really. Our drummer Dan is getting way into that now and I think we probably would but it’s weird, we’ve come across people who’ve played World Of Warcraft (www.worldofwarcraft.com) and it literally wrecked their lives – they had to go to meetings about it, like Alcoholics Anonymous meetings but for videogames. They literally lost their homes, their jobs… it was bad.

What’s the last thing you looked up on the internet?

I’ve been reading a lot about the time-space continuum and the Hadron Collider (http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/). I was really sad that it went wrong. We were meant to find out so much from it. I think that scientists are just honing in on it and I think that they’re going to be able to manipulate time. It’s a very exciting time to be alive.

Are there any sites you check regularly?

I love the doomsday 2012 Maya calendar stuff. The Maya calendar expires on 21 December 2012 (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/2007-03-27-maya-2012_n.htm). And what’s also interesting is there are fortune tellers throughout history who all predicted the same thing from totally different centuries and different times. Before the apocalypse comes I want to move to a tropical island and live out the imaginary utopia I have in my mind.

What other websites would you recommend?

Failblog.org. It’s people failing caught on tape. I also go to Realnews.com and that’s as close as you can get to unbiased news. It’s all funded by private sponsors, so it’s not advertising. And one more – Thevenusproject.com. It’s this idea of a society that’s resource-based instead of economically based. People do things that they naturally have a propensity to be good at and it’s this whole society based on that, with no money, so it minimises the ego.
