The Grudge 2

The Grudge 2 star Arielle Kebbel talks about set rituals, evil clicking sounds and being a ghost

The US remake of Japan pants filler The Grudge 2 isn't technically a remake. It's a sequel to the US remake of The Grudge original. Still, the premise is still pretty much the same - a series of barely connected protagonists suffering the wrath of a clicking, limb-broken spectre and her pale-faced, just-as-petrifying offspring. And there's not a single bloody happy ending in sight.

The Grudge 2 is out on DVD on May 7. We caught up with one of the film's victims, actress, Arielle Kebbel, to discuss those horrible clicking sounds...

Do you believe in the supernatural?

Yes, I am actually a ghost.

Really?

No, I don’t think so.

That what be a good reason to believe in the supernatural. Have you seen any ghosts?

No. [Pauses]. No, I’m pretty certain I haven’t seen the white light coming at me.

Starring in a film about curses, weren’t you worried about being struck with some kind of Exorcist-style curse on set?

No, we did what's known as the ‘flapping’ at the start of filming. It's a Japanese tradition where everyone gathers, an altar is set-up with rice and sugar placed for worship. A priest enters, starts a chant and a prayer. And from then onwards everyone is protected from all those bad and evil things during filming.

How freaky was the clicking ghost woman in real-life?

Just as scary!

How did she get into character?

To watch her warm-up is phenomenal. She’ll sit there and do all these stretches, and when you watch her, there’s no CGI involved. That’s actually how she twitches and contorts her body. Everyone behind the monitor – well, you should see their faces. What you see on camera is exactly what you get. And yet she’s so beautiful as a person. It’s a shame that people get so freaked out, because no-one wants to speak to the ‘creepy’ woman. She does her job too well!

Did the click noise give you nightmares?

[CRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRKKKKK!!!]

I don’t think can put that in the interview, I can’t spell it.

No-one can. You know it’s the director who makes that noise? It’s supposed to symbolise the ghost trying to scream with a broken neck. He [the director] had a habit of creeping up behind us and making that noise to freak us out. He's responsible for the noise in all the Grudge movies. He says ‘there are lots of Japanese directors, but none of them can make this noise like me, so if I lose work as a director, at least I know I can make money making noises!’

Maybe he's thinking of selling it as a mobile ring-tone...

Exactly.
