A crime thriller where a destitute
taxi driver is forced to take work as
a hit man, then becomes embroiled in
a violent world of professional killers
he can’t deal with, The Yellow Sea is one of the finest movies to come out
of South Korea in yonks.
Although the complex story is light on dialogue and fails to create central characters you’ll care about, it really doesn’t matter as this film is all about dramatic chase sequences, gory gang fights, and tense, almost Hitchcockian set-pieces. And while The Yellow Sea isn’t as slick as more traditional South Korean crime capers, it offers a more realistic take
on Far Eastern mobsters, with a plot that feels loose and spontaneous, and characters on both sides of the law that are deeply flawed.
