Copter

From the edges of space to a club near you

Like The Hives from space - or The John Spencer Blues Explosion if they were androids - intergalactic soul rockers Copter make the soundtrack for house parties at the edge of the universe. And with a fierce live show and a talking robot with a Theremin for a head, Copter is one of the most exciting new bands on the planet. We had a cosmic conversation with Copter preacher, Stevie...

Hello, spaceman. Tell me about Copter.

We come from 500 years in the future, and are on Earth as part of a cosmic witness-relocation programme. Our story involves a soul heist, death, rebirth, time travel and some very bad driving. Our guardian, Count Dante, sent us to Earth because it's the furthest place from heaven, so the gods will never find us here.

And what are you going to do now that you've settled in, erm, Birmingham?

Part of our 50-year cosmic community service is to play rocket-fuelled rock'n'soul music for Earthlings. How great is that? It sure beats painting fences for redemption.

Tell me more about your robot, M.I.L.O.

When we crashed on Earth the supercomputer on our ship was preserved in a black box, and we transplanted it into our old servodroid, Miguel. Thus was born the cantankerous, mouthy son-of-a-fridge everyone loves. We all agreed we'd keep a low profile to avoid detection while we settled on your planet, but M.I.L.O. was straight out on the tiles, all hopped up on speedballs, punching photographers, groping ladies and claiming, "I am the fission king, I can process anything." So we deactivated his arms and hoverjets to keep him out of trouble.

And what about those ridiculous uniforms?

Our uniforms are based on the undergarments worn by prisoners from our home world. Rock'n'roll is outlawed where we come from, so we wear them in protest against the closed minds of the old order while we pleasure others with our antics. It's a nod to our past, a nod to your future. Hey, it's confusing for us, too.
