Vampire

Gothic space traveller settles in Japan

The only surviving member of a lost world millions of light years from Earth, the slinky Vampire has been secretly living among us for centuries, watching the human race evolve. Now settled in Japan, our interstellar visitor has carved herself a niche as a peddler of gloomy cyber-goth, and has finally broken her silence about life on our backward planet.

Tell me about your home world.

I come from a star in the centre of your galaxy. Our civilisation had developed to a high level, so much so that my people had entered a hibernation state as there was nothing they actually had to do for themselves. The Vampire you see now is not my real form, and is merely a carbon unit body I've inhabited that's generic to Japan. On our planet we looked more like rocks because our bodies had degenerated through lack of physical exercise. We didn't have arms or legs.

Right. Then what happened?

A nearby star exploded, and my planet was destroyed. When I awoke some time later, I found I'd become a body of spiritual energy that was drifting through space. When I arrived on Earth, mankind was still at an early stage of evolution, and I had great fun watching the monkeys. Over the centuries I've inhabited the bodies of many humans, and learned about strategy and politics. I was particularly fond of inhabiting Cesare Borgia of the Renaissance era, the son of Pope Alexander VI, who waged war across Italy. When he shouted his battle cry, I gorged myself on his fear and excitement.

Are you really a vampire? Do you suck blood?

I'm different from the vampires of Earth legend. Instead, I take energy from people as nutrition. I eat spiritual energy.

How do you choose your 'victims'?

The common factor is a sense of darkness. For most people, darkness is something negative; but in reality it's more fun and empowering to live inside people who are notorious and always doing something exciting. I always choose people who are free from religion and completely open-minded. They are pleasant to exist inside.

Is 'cyber-goth' an accurate way to describe your music?

My host would describe her work that way, because people in the pop business are always striving to define their product. But I don't think music should be limited in this way - you should embrace all styles.

A few Far Eastern acts have found success in the West recently. Would you like to be the next big Japanese pop export?

Of course, my host would like that very much. She's making a new record right now, and I'm already familiar with Europe, having traversed the globe over the centuries. I'm getting ready. Are you ready for me?
