When cult drama-pop favourites Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley announced to the world in 2007 they’d discovered a set of conjoined twins who performed songs about their strange life, the Bizarreniverse was set abuzz. For months, a single MySpace page was the only evidence of the musical twosome.

Two solemn faces peered out from old-fashioned, sepia-toned photographs and tracks such as ‘Elephant Elephant’ and ‘Chicken Man’ were an aural testimony to the life of the conjoined twins, who were subjected to a series of abusive, exploitative situations; a poultry farm where the twins were housed in a barn and grew up speaking in clucks, a lakeside lodge where they were pestered by ‘uncles’ of dubious proclivities, and the Dillard And Fullerton Travelling Circus, where the girls finally found happiness and made friends with conjoined elephants Bimba and Kimba.

After leaving the circus and setting up home in the Don’t Tell Motel in Walla Walla, the twins discovered MySpace and created a profile. They then messaged Jason and Amanda, asking for their help with getting their music heard. Impressed with their abilities, Jason and Amanda stepped in to produce the twins’ album, drafting in a raft of indie superheroes, including Weird Al Yankovic, Frances Bean Cobain, Mindless Self Indulgence and Andrew WK to sing along on the eighties power metal tune ‘My Space’.
 
Next up came live gigs, and the duo’s first tour. The twins’ sold-out debut London shows took place in restored Edwardian gem Bush Hall, which is where we caught up with the twosome. It was a surreal, joyful experience. Our shoot involved live chickens, elephants, guns and sombreros. Jason and Amanda were on hand to steady the twins’ nerves and to feed them their favourite snacks, including Twix bars, (the first chocolate they’d ever tasted). Amanda’s fiancé, Sandman, Coraline and Stardust creator Neil Gaiman, turned up on the sunny street outside in a sports car driven by garrulous chat show host and freak fan Jonathan Ross. And a gang of ardent Evelyn Evelyn fans dressed as clowns, pirates and crying dolls partied outside the venue all day, waiting for the doors to open, hoping to see their heroines.

The talented twosome talk Twix, and life out of the chicken coop

Can you give us a brief history of your life so far?
We were alone with the chicken man and the chickens and then at the Underwood Lodge with Mrs Bulger and then went to the circus and then left the circus.

How have your first few shows been?
Our first shows have been very nice and full with people in every chair and Jason and Amanda said that there were standing ovations and that was good .

Are Amanda, Jason and your tour manager Sxip looking after you?
Yes. But sometimes they leave us in the van.

What’s been the most exciting sight on tour?
We saw Thomas Dolby who Amanda said was a famous eighties musician but we didn’t know his music but she played it for us on the internet and it was nice also we saw the Eiffel Tower on the internet.

What are your fans like? Have any of them brought you presents?
They make a lot of drawings of us that don’t look like us but they are good at art and also a lot of people bring us Twix and we like that because we like Twix.

Do you get stared at as you walk down the street?
We don’t go into the street because we don’t like it but we left the place in London to get a Twix at the place next to the place we were playing and it was ok but Jason was angry and said he would have got a Twix for us but Amanda was not mad and her boyfriend Neil said it was good for us to have an adventure by ourself.

What appeals to you most about MySpace?
All of the friends we are making!

Would you like to swap sides for a day?
No, we would be confused.

Have you ever had to go on stage after you’ve had an argument?
We don’t like your question.

What’s the worst argument you’ve ever had?
We have arguments all the time because one of us thinks that a word means something that it doesn’t mean but then the other one knows what it means but isn’t sure and so we have to Google it.

Do you have any rituals before you go on stage?
We make sure our hair is OK and we hug our friends.

Which of your songs do you most like to play live and why?
‘Evelyn Evelyn’ because it is our most real song. Also we like playing our Joy Division song called ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.

Which musicians do you most admire?
We like Tegan and Sara because they are twins and they are brave. Also we like Guns N’ Roses and we like musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar.

Do you have the same dreams?
We dream about the same things but we don’t know if it’s the same because you can’t talk about dreams in words because they’re dreams.

Where do you see yourselves at 50?
We would like to go back to Walla Walla and maybe move into a house.

Is there anything you want to do, but can’t?
Ride a bicycle.
