The totally fucked-up, subtitled tale sees a man seeking revenge for his wife’s murder. Yet while the premise sounds simple, what transpires is anything but. For starters, the eponymous anti-hero summons up a demon that grants him superhuman strength and dark side powers: an ugly little bastard who continually pops out of Chaplin’s right shoulder to lead him to the reprobate who wasted his missus – with great comic effect.

Realism’s obviously not an issue here; neither is narrative, which plays second fiddle to hardcore ultra-violence throughout. But, let’s face it, not all of us give a shit about such details anyway: particularly not when the film in question is a lightening-paced, relentless assault on the retinas – and rammed to the gills with truckloads of human offal!

Ultimately, director Emanuele De Santi has made his debut feature a gorehound’s wet dream, by splicing extreme anime-style action with horror flick histrionics, then dunking the brutal combo in the luridly coloured surrealism of a bad acid trip. His performance in the lead role is blisteringly unforgettable too.
