Dog meat is popular among some of Indonesia's Christians but is shunned as 'haram' (unclean) by the archipelago's dominant Muslim population.

Dog dishes include 'Sate Anjing' (brochettes of dog covered in sweet peanut sauce) and 'Anjing Panggang' (grilled dog marinated in chili, tomatoes and lemongrass). Black or brown dogs are said to be the tastiest. "The Korean restaurants here also like to serve up dog penis as a male energy booster," says an abattoir worker. "It goes down brilliantly with a cold beer."
Other exotic protein alternatives eaten in Indonesia include bat, field rat, and macaque monkey.
