Trash City, the mind-bending, sensory assaulting cabaret show, debuts next Wednesday (April 7th) at the Roundhouse, Camden. Created and directed by the same people behind the infamous Glastonbury venue, Trash City promises vampires, fire-breathing robots and non-stop twisted delights until the early hours. The show run's until Saturday, 10th April, and tickets are just £20, so there's no excuse for missing out. If that doesn't sate your appetite, we've got Trash City godmother Ruby Blues to tell you why the show is going to mangle your psyche into a whole new kind of awesome:
Trash City eh? So what’s it all about?
Well Trash City began at Glastonbury, we had our own field arena over the last three years. The idea was to create an interactive, theatrical experience people could enter. It incorporated it’s own intergalactic red-light district, which was based on 2000 AD comics. One venue was like a bombed out New York tenement street – but when you stepped inside the room, it was actually a late 70’s gay/transsexual disco. Another venue was exactly like the Titty Twister bar in ‘From Dusk Til Dawn'. And we had amazing animatronics and robots courtesy of the Mutoid Waste Co.
Sounds trippy, I’m sure the revellers loved it. How did this show come about then?
The Roundhouse commissioned us to put together a theatre experience, and have given us loads of support, We’re taking the best elements of the Glasto experience – the robots, the set designs, the acts – and crossing it with a circus, cabaret, drag comedy show. It’s going to be a complete assault on the senses.
What kind of assaulting action can the audience expect? Physical?
Well, they are going to have to watch out for vampires. We’ll be sending robots and vehicles into the crowd too, so they’ll be getting up close with fire breathing mechanical beasts. The audience will very much be inside the experience. Then after the show, there’s a big party. Each night different bands play – many of them who originally played Trash City at Glasto. The venue will be rocking until the early hours.
The show starts next Wednesday. You ready?
No! But it’s taking shape and looking good. Will it be a success? I hope so! I’m really excited about it – more excited than terrified anyway. The show is a cross between the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Wizard of Oz and Sesame Street. It’s not like anything that’s been done before. There’s such a diverse group of people behind it, it’s not like anything that’s come before, so it's going to be great.
What if the show really takes off? Would you guys be interested in touring?
Oh yeah absolutely. We’d love to take it to some of the world’s big venues. Trash City would be perfect for Vegas!
