On Saturday morning, the day after Alice Cooper’s storming set at the mighty Sonisphere festival, we interviewed the rock legend for the issue of Bizarre on sale 31 August.
But he also let us in on details of two secret UK gigs he’s planning for later this year…
On 31 October and 1 November, Alice is set to perform two special Halloween shows – titled Alice Cooper’s Halloween Night Of Fear – at The Roundhouse, London. For these performances, Alice will be joined by Jim Rose of the Jim Rose Circus, with support from Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction. What a line-up!
But that’s not all. Alice is also seeking new performers to bring these ghoulish shows screaming to life, and is searching for the UK’s hottest circus, sideshow, freaky, shocking and downright weird performers. And he wants Bizarre readers to join him on stage.
“I’m positive that, in a country with millions of people, and moreover, a nation that’s known for its eccentrics, there must be that 0.0001 per cent of freaks that have got some strange talent that no-one else possesses, like, say, riding naked on a unicycle while on fire and juggling grenades,” Alice told us.
“I’m seeking out those people who can do something – however obscure – that no-one else in the world can do, and then giving them the perfect place to showcase their strange gifts.
“I won’t be at all shocked if many of these strangely talented people are Bizarre readers. I’ve read the magazine plenty of times, so I know full well what’s in there! I always say that if Disneyland is on one side of a road, and there’s an airplane crash on the other side, more people will cross over to look at the crash – it’s like that with Bizarre. You turn a page, and find a picture of the worst, most horrific outbreak of boils ever recorded on camera, or a humongous tumour growing in someone’s stomach. At first, you’re like, ‘Woah! I don’t want to see that!’, but in just a second you’re glued. Part of the intrigue is that any one of those things shown in Bizarre that have happened to another human being, it’s possible, however unlikely, that they could happen to you. It’s about being fascinated with the human world, and curious about the extremes of human behaviour and experience. For me, that’s the charm of the magazine. And people who are into exploring extreme experiences via Bizarre are maybe more likely to be the kind of people who explore extremes within themselves, and develop the freaky stunts I’m searching for in my show.”
And here’s how to enter… From 3-7 August ONLY, Alice will be accepting video submissions of sideshow and freak acts on his website (www.alicecooper.com).
The best will be invited to a live audition on 9 August at The London Dungeon, 28-34 Tooley Street, London, SE1 2SZ at 7pm, where they’ll perform in front of a panel of judges consisting of Alice himself, Planet Rock presenter Nicky Horne, plus other special guests to be announced.
Tickets for Alice Cooper’s Halloween Night Of Fear go on sale on Friday 13 August at 9am, and will cost £33.50 standing, £38.50 seated (available from www.livenation.co.uk).
Bizarre will doubtless be throwing horns in the front row on both nights, and we’ll see you there for the shows of the century!
