We have an Ikon Custom axe worth at least £500 to give away! To enter, send your name and contact details to Alix_fox@dennis.co.uk, with a photograph of you playing air guitar. The most charismatic snap will win!
As well as being “the sultan OF self-love, and your new saviour,” Marc Anthony H Bertone is the CEO of Ikon Customs – a Texas-based company that makes the most retina-evaporating, eardrum-fellating electric guitars you’ve ever encountered. Every part of each instrument is interchangeable, and the bodies are supplied either ready-painted or plain so you can colour them yourself, allowing you to build a guitar that looks and sounds like the axe of your most sopping wet dreams – yet for a reasonable price of 0 (£450) upwards for a complete guitar.
“I’m trying to squish those elitist dicks who charge ,000 (£3,900) or more for a copy of a Gibson Les Paul or a Fender Stratocaster. Sure, those guitars may be good, but companies that sell them are still ripping people off by using horseshit propaganda and false American pride in an attempt to justify price gouging,” says Marc.
“People often tell me I could charge more for my axes, but I couldn’t live with myself if I stole from musicians, especially my target market of metal fans who are known for making music for the love of it, rather than to earn dough. Metal musicians get enough shit from everyone as it is, so these instruments of glorious doom are especially for them. Mainstream guitars are for mainstream artists. They can fuck off.”
Besides wood, Ikon’s beasts are constructed from synthetic materials including Kevlar, carbon fibre and fibreglass. “I’m a big fan of man-made substances, because I’m a big fan of mankind’s superiority over everything! I’m proud to be an evolved human being!” Marc laughs.
The sculpted shapes of his guitar bodies are inspired by the old school death metal record cover artwork created by illustrators such as HR Giger, Chris Moyen, Dan Seagrave and Dave McKean. If you love metal, you’re gonna want one of these axes like a fat kid wants stomach-stapling.
