A troupe of disabled artists put on a jaw-dropping show called Criptease ealrier this year (26 July to be precise), to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the date the Americans With Disabilities Act was passed. The law protects disabled people in the USA from being discriminated against in key areas such as employment and access to services, and ‘Thalidomide kid’ and outrageous ‘cripple’ figurehead Mat ‘Sealboy’ Fraser and friends marked its inception in typical scandalous fashion – with a night of erotic dance and comedy at the New York club, Le Poisson Rouge.
Entertainers included 3ft666in-tall Nik Sin (AKA Mini Marilyn Manson), boylesquers Tigger! and Chris Go Go Harder, the “sassy, sexy, crip powerhouse of wow” Queer Gimp Girl, and, who’s currently performing her first one-woman play called It Hasn’t Happened Yet…
“Critics have said some great things about the show, but I’ve had one bad review that claimed Morris dancing would be more fun,” says Liz. “Taking this to heart, I will now be performing the rest of my tour wearing colourful ribbons and bells around my crippled limbs.”
Julie Atlas Muz was also on the Criptease bill. She zipped over to Coney Island four days later to star in This Or That: a live gameshow that’s popular Stateside. Contestants vie for questionable prizes – including obese inflatable sex dolls or a sharp buttock-spanking session – by participating in off-the-wall challenges such as identifying an obscure smell, climbing into a gigantic balloon, or getting naked while stuffing marshmallows into their mouths.
The winner gets to choose between two curtains, labelled ‘This’ and ‘That’. Behind one waits a burlesque beauty, and behind the other is an act so dire you’d rather watch your dad whack one off into a Fleshlight. Or Morris dance.
