It was a day many hoped would never come – the closing of Astroland, Coney Island’s super-kitsch theme park and one of Brooklyn’s oldest attractions.
Burned to the ground in 1975 and built again from scratch, the park boasted The Cyclone, an old-school wooden roller coaster, and a bundle of other retina-ripping rides. But as time and tastes changed, Astroland’s audience dwindled and the park finally lost out to the ongoing redevelopment taking place across Coney Island.
But fans pushed their melancholy aside for a night of celebration and Bizarre joined them for an unofficial Astroland wake. Revellers played old-fashioned carnival games and enjoyed a blast of burlesque from Miss Clams Casino and Sapphire Jones, who jiggled like a Catholic school girl getting nailed in a cemetery while El Jefe Vs Demons blasted out filthy psychobilly licks that literally made her clothes fall off.
