Mark Ryden ExhibitionThe master of lowbrow art unveiled his meaty new paintings at a star-studded exhibition opening in New York. And we were there!Text: Bob Self / Photos: Christopher Lane | July 2010 |
Good day, Bizarre readers, it’s Bob Self here, from cult art publishing house Baby Tattoo. This month, I’m taking you on a Dark Art field trip to The Gay 90s in New York City. Shazam! No, we’re not time travelling; The Gay 90s: Olde Tyme Art Show is the title of the latest solo exhibition by the superstar painter of pork chops, disembodied presidents and creepy Lolitas, Mark Ryden. He’s probably the turn-of-this-century’s most talented, popular, and sought-after master. The opening took place at the Paul Kasmin gallery in Manhattan’s Chelsea district, which was both spacious and gracious – some high-end galleries aren’t so welcoming towards lowbrow riff-raff, don’t you know? Abraham Lincoln, Jesus and a bevy of wide-eyed innocents were all hanging on the walls, but Ryden’s 6ft tall oil painting, ‘Incarnation’, which depicts a girl in an astonishingly rendered frock made from meat, was the centre of attention. The hundreds of art collectors, fans, and insiders who attended the event had been instructed to don their spiffiest ‘olde tyme’ clothing, and Ryden came armed with a black sack filled with ‘Pink Lincoln’ brooches which he handed out to the best-dressed guests. Now, let’s mingle… |
