When UK filmmaker Jeanie Finlay discovered that 150 British and American goths take a cruise around Bermuda every year, she gathered up a film crew and jumped aboard. She tells Bizarre about making her 'gothumentary'...
"It all started when I went to a friend's sister's wedding. I’d known her since and was shocked to see that she was still a goth. She looked amazing and it go me thinking: 'What's being goth all about?'
I knew my question would be answered when I heard that 150 goths were going on a cruise to Bermuda on a crazy ship that has neon lights, an all-you-can-eat buffet, and pina coladas.
For the film, I selected a group of goths to follow closely: Lobster is outgoing and crazy; Heath is a 45-year-old transvestite from New York; Mike and Amanda were on their honeymoon; Sean is an ex-soilder with Gulf War Syndrome who wears black to campaign for peace; and Bridie, Ian and their son Kyle are dedicated goths from Wales.
I interviewed them about their lives and asked other passengers what they thought being a goth meant. I hope the film dispels some myths about goths, but my main motivation for making it was to ask the questions that I felt too embarrassed to ask people back home in Britain."
