What do you do when you see a dying tree? Innovative British artist Philippa Lawrence likes to wrap them in coloured cloth to capture their spirit. And now her project 'Bound', in which ancient trees across the 13 old countries of Wales were colourfully 'mummified', is being celebrated in an exhibition at the Glynn Vivian Gallery in Swansea, Wales.
Drawn to the country from a city upbringing, Lawrence sees the works as an 'act of veneration and meditation on the trees (and ours) past, present and future': "it is important to be able to see the trees from the road or from a well-worn path so that the audience is those that pass by," she says at the PHILIPPA LAWRENCE OFFICIAL SITE
Before 'bounding' a chosen tree, Lawrence stresses that she seeks the landowner's permission beforehad, with the promise of returning it to its original state afterwards.
