Tokyo Underground weekend was testimony to what happens when you get three of the top fetish/freak party organisers (Tokyo Decadence, Tokyo Perve and Alamode Night) together under one roof for a night of total bedlam. The turnout was huge, everyone was mixing superbly, and new friends were made from scenes just as deranged as each other.
Tokyo Decadence usually brings out the candy-coloured cybergoth kids, with glaring fashion that requires sunglasses to look at, and tonight was no exception. Taking over a dancefloor that heaved all night with collapsing-in-a-gropefest-type shenanigans, they played hard until a 9ft rubber praying mantis came out of nowhere to save the day.
Tokyo Perve are the Latex dons of Tokyo, and have the strictest dresscode of anyone in town. Their floor was deliciously black and shiny, with bullwhips flying in a mishmash of pervert pandemonium.
Last but not least, Alamode provided the prancing dark-wave/Lolita types cloaked in frills and Victoriana-inspired garb, carrying (but never actually playing) violins and other items of gothic-ness, and tripping over each other’s bandages before passing out on the sofa from gloom.
Besides the fashion there was plenty of entertainment to be found in the decadent goings-on: poledancing, bands, S&M displays, and general indecipherable gothic weirdness involving wailing.
While there are some punters who will regularly go to a cross-section of events, it’s rare that three scenes would get together like this, and perhaps this marks a new era for Tokyo’s alternative scene. As DJ Violet tells us, it’s a “Revolution!”
